Batch_1_milled_with_peppermint
Batch_1_milled_with_vitamin_eYesterday I rebatched our first batch of soap. Our soap batches weigh about a pound each and I divided this first batch in two. I wanted to add peppermint oil to half and Vitamin E to the other half so that if either of them caused the soap to seize I would know which one was the culprit. The both played nice so today when I rebatch the second batch of soap I’ll try half of it with a combo and I haven’t yet sorted out what to do with the other half. I haven’t got anything to use for a loaf mold just yet so I’m using the molds that Grace gave me.

  1. Wow! I have always wanted to make soap before. I might just have to try next month….looks like fun.

  2. If you end up making lots of soap (it is fun isn’t it?) You can make a wooden loaf mold with some wood from the local lumber yard’s scrap bin.
Richard made me one years ago with hinges so that the sides folded down to get the loaf out once it was done. You just line the inside of the mold with freezer or wax paper.
Here is the url with the plans for it: http://www.chestnutfarms.com/Soap_and_supplies/info/mold_plan.html

  3. That looks like a lot of fun. Tell us how it feels and what you think.

  4. dont’ you love it when things turn out as well as you hoped? i made my molds out of wood since i wanted a loaf of soap to cut bars from but the shapes look cute…might have to look into those…

  5. So I made those cranberry cookies and I put an egg in it. They were good when they first came out but after they cooled, they were pretty crunchy. Oh well! Still yummy!

  6. The bread, the soap, the cookies… you are so productive it’s a wonder you can stand yourself.

  7. The soap sounds great and I imagine the peppermint smells wonderful. I love how you actually made the soap from scratch, instead of the way I have done it–melting plain glycerin from the craft store!

  8. Awesome, Julie. Can’t wait to get my hands on those!
Today I pried my “interesting” batch out of the mold and cut it with a wire. It doesn’t look too bad! pH 10, which is acceptable for a still-wet soap.
