Thanks Kristan!

Package_oneThe mailman brought this excellent package yesterday afternoon complete with a gorgeous handmade card, my favorite chocolate, a cute little notepad (how did you know I’m always writing on napkins and ball bands?), some tissues (just in time for hay fever season), a lovely candle and some beautiful yarn that reminds me of violets. Every time I do one of these exchanges I invariably get some yarn I haven’t tried and each time I wonder how they heck did they manage to find something I haven’t tried? This yarn falls firmly in that category and I can’t wait to turn that into socks! Thanks so much!

When I picked Dan up from school yesterday afternoon he broke into this story about art metals class. He was helping his friend make a ring and said friend finished with the shaping and then wanted to fire-harden it in the kiln so it would hold it’s shape better. A little something got on the ring while it was in the kiln so once it was out the friend was holding the ring (with tongs I assume) and Daniel was trying to knock the stuff off with his pencil which promtly caught fire. There were a few panicked moments of waving the flaming pencil but eventually it was dropped to the ground and the fire stamped out. At this point in the story I’m saying, "no no, you never feed oxygen to the fire boy, SMOTHER!" And somehow the alarm didn’t go off nor did the teacher have any idea what happened.

When Dan was a baby he was towheaded and just like my siblings and his dad his hair began to go brown as he got older.
He recently asked if he could dye it blond and I thought why not since it used to be that color. He hasn’t got much hair anyway so whatever he does to it will be short-lived. He was allergic to the first kit we bought so we tried this "no ammonia" version and that one seemed alright. I do think he’s ended up with strawberry blond rather than blond and he wants something much lighter. We’ll have to try a different brand next time. Any hair dye advice will be greatly appreciated since I have no experience with it whatsoever. (He’s not disgruntled about the pictures, he just thinks he needs to look "tough" in them, hence the deadpan face.)

  1. What great package. I’m glad that no one was hurt in the fire incident!

  2. Oh… I remember the “tough” faces from my brothers at that age…
My Dan (boyfriend, not son) was a towhead as a child and INSISTS that he is blonde. And he’s not. He has light brown hair. Nowhere near blonde.
    What’s the yarn called?

  3. Great package, looks like a great swap. Happy Birthday!

  4. Fun SP package!
I think Natural Instincts doesn’t lighten more than a shade or two. I usually use L’Oreal Preference, but if he had a reaction to the first one you used, it might be hard to find something usable that will *really* lighten it. Or there’s always Sun-In ;)
And Happy Actual Birthday, from one Aries to Another :)

  5. Happy Birthday!!! Those are some great gifts. That sock yarn looks really nice.
Now I don’t have a lot of experience with dyeing my own hair – as we know I have a fear of the hairdresser – but I think to go lighter you have to bleach out the color. I had highlights done once – I know it was very funny – and they bleached out the color and then applied a light blond color. It was pretty harsh and my hair felt dry afterward. It was one of those should try once things and now I’m happy letting it go white.
I do think the color looks very nice and natural on him.

  6. From a mom who’s daughter changes her haircolor almost as often as she changes socks :) Going blonde is tough. You basically have to strip all the haircolor out and it requires heavy duty bleach chemicals that tend to burn the scalp. You may want to have it done professionally. Oh and don’t let him go black, it takes forever to grow out.
Oh and what kind of yarn did you get?

  7. I think someone already mentioned this but to go blonde you have to first strip all the color from your hair. He should probably see a stylist.

  8. You might have to get rid of all color and then add color back to get the blond he wants…Sun-In will work too but it might turn it orangy. Good luck! :o )
