Off the wheel

Supervising
Specs
WpiSunday afternoon I filled up a bobbin with white merino to ply with the two singles of blue I’d had waiting. I was kind of surprised at how it really dominates the finished yarn and it’ll be really interesting to see what it looks like knit up. As I begin to knit with my handspun more often I’m also beginning to remember to record more of the relevant specs. This is the first time I’ve remembered to check WPI so instead of guessing I had a sportweight yarn I could read the chard and see that 12 wraps per inch is indeed a sportweight yarn. Yesterday morning I woke up fairly early so I had time to ply before breakfast while Gabby supervised. I wonder if I haven’t plied this yarn too loosely?

  1. OOOOOOOOOOO pretty. I am jealous. I want to spin. WAAAAHHHHHH. Have to knit socks….. OK I will wait.

  2. If you think it’s plied too loosely, you can always run it through the wheel again to add more plying twist, right?
What chart are you using for WPI info? I just spun a yarn that measured out to 12 WPI, and according to the charts I consulted, that’s a worsted or heavy worsted. I haven’t swatched yet, as I want to wet finish the yarn first, and then re-measure WPI and swatch. However, the YPP measurements I got (640 YPP) would make it a bulky weight. I did spin it pretty much as a worsted yarn, so it is dense, which might explain why it weighs out heavier. (I’ve been told that a lot of handspun is denser that commercial yarns of similar thickness…) Thoughts?

  3. It looks gorgeous. I can’t wait to see it knit up. You can run it through the wheel again to put more ply in. I’ve done the same thing. Had to do to get it just right sometimes. Sometimes I’ve had more ply in one area and not enough in another. After a good soaking it sometimes evens itself out.
Gabby is so sweet in her supervising duties.

  4. Way to go, Gabby! Keep up the good work!
