I can’t remember where I got this recipe now but someone on my Google reader list "shared" the post (Susan I bet, she shares the best craft and recipe posts- Thanks Susan!). As usual, I deviated a fair bit because I just can’t leave well enough alone but I really was surprised at how much I liked this. I thought it would be too vinegary for me, definitely not.
Artichoke Soup
12 ounces sliced cremini mushrooms
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 rib celery, chopped
1 small sweet onion, peeled and chopped
12 ounces marinated artichokes with liquid
2 cups water
salt to taste
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 cup heavy cream
Soften the mushrooms, carrot, celery and onion in olive oil in a large Dutch oven over high heat with frequent stirring. Add remaining ingredients except for cream. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat (but keep it at a simmer), partially cover and cook a further 20-30 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in cream and serve with hot crusty bread.
I’ve been working off and on with some spinning this past week so the wheel has stayed out in the living room. Winnie has decided the treadle makes a comfy pillow. Silly girl!
Picture him with a light saber in his hand, we found one at Target yesterday afternoon. He abandoned the horns because he’d tried to stick them on with hair gel which didn’t dry and there wasn’t time for the eyelash adhesive which worked perfectly in the test run. The face paint is all wrong because he’d gone with four horns and there wasn’t one in the center of his forehead so I had to make stuff up but I think it still looks very Sithly. Last night we added beltloops to his pants so he could hang stuff from his belt. I made a couple little black drawstring bags for holding little things. We gave his head a fresh buzz last night as close as I could get it and you really can’t see the stubble through the paint but the painting did take over 90 minutes this morning. Costume day is today, not sure why they aren’t having it tomorrow but we were ready.
Someone has decided that an open spinning bag makes a great place to sleep. Naughty girl!
I needed some mindless knitting earlier this week so I cast on for these yoga socks. I am using Knitpicks Swish superwash in worsted weight (one skein doesn’t quite make it) and size 5 dpns. They are almost done but I’ll have to wait for a second skein to arrive before I can knit those last few rows on sock #2.
What with all that spinning going on I need to keep my hands well moisturized so this week I’ve also been making lotion bars and body butter. I’m quite settled on the lotion bar recipe but I tried a new concoction for the body butter which contains hemp oil and carrot essential oil rather than the almond oil I used last time. I’m very interested to see how this new recipe does and with the cooler drier weather it’s a great time to test it out.
One of the things that happened when I visited Mme Purl last month is that I realized I spin a great deal better on her Lendrum than I do on my Traditional. We spent the whole weekend scheming and plotting and trying to figure out how to effect a switch but when I got home and the local knitters learned what was up it all just fell into place. One friend is going to buy my wheel along with the jumbo flyer and another friend is going to take the lace flyer off my hands. Between the two I have a nice start on financing the Lendrum and Santa plans to take care of the rest with additional bobbins and things to come later for my birthday. That means I need to clear off those bobbins so that my wheel will be all ready for her new home in December. Last night I finally made it out to spinning and got to work on this fun superwash roving I dyed with Mme Purl ages ago. It was based on my favorite shirt from high school which was a yellow and orange flower print with a blue background, just exactly as bright as this roving.
Gwen is supervising the cutting out of the parts for the rest of the costume. The pants were fitted yesterday and look like they are turning out quite nicely. I’m quite pleased about that as I’ve always been sort of jinxed when it comes to sewing pants (which is why I went with the super basic scrubs pattern for the pants).
The serger is my best friend today. I put together the pants for Dan’s costume in a jiffy. Here they are awaiting elastic and hemming but his presence is required for a fitting first. Next up will be cutting out pieces for the kimono-style jacket.
