Rain, rain, and more rain

Tell me how many beads there are
In a silver chain
Of evening rain,
Unravelled from the tumbling main…

And still through the leaves, as they fluttered or fell The breezes sang, in the willow dell. – Spencer

032I was delighted Saturday when Jason brought out Grandma’s willow ware for dinner. I’d entirely forgotten about it tucked away in the basement. He washed up a few plates and things for dinner and today I’m washing the rest of it, getting it out of all that newspaper and planning to sew some felt covers for it when time permits. It was interesting to see the variety of marks on the backs of the dishes as I loaded it into the washer.

A rainbow of flowers

012009018Jason brought home these lovely flowers for my birthday and they’ve really brightened up the house. Saturday was lovely and sunny but it was only a brief break before the March monsoons returned. He also got me these awesome headphones for the iTouch. They don’t make that annoying hissy noise of the “active noise reduction” and the in-ear headphones are soft and comfortable.

Nepeta cataria

018I gave the girls a little catnip yesterday which seems to have caused a fur explosion. Gabby *really* needs a haircut!

Thanks Carrie!

365.084 3/25/2010010013A few days ago I found a really heavy package waiting for me at the post office and couldn’t imagine what was in it. When I got home, I was delighted to find it contained a copy of “The Bread Baker’s Apprentice“.  We were just finishing up the multi-grain bread I’d made so it was perfect timing to try something new. This is anadama bread which has cornmeal and molasses in it yet it’s not sweet. I’ve never eaten it before and the recipe says it’s a local bread that originated in Massachusetts.  I look forward to trying many new bread recipes and have already learned a lot from this book.

Cool Beans

Last fall was really busy with test knitting for Sock Madness. It’s such a relief to finally be able to post some of these pictures that I’ve been sitting on for so long. When I saw these cute little socks I thought they’d be a breeze but they are deceptive. Getting those stripes to behave nicely when you decrease for the heel and then pick up for the gusset was rather tricky. Kudos to the designer, Yarnyenta, for creating this inventive pattern and then slogging through the heel a second time to correct some pattern errors and add more detail for those of us less talented. She did a great job and once we had a baby steps approach to the heel hammered out I got through it and the rest of the pattern went fairly smoothly. I knit a second cuff last month but finishing these will have to wait until I get through my swap socks (I’m ready for cables today, yay!)

In which the singles become yarn

042043045The acquarius yarn turned out nicely and there’s plenty for socks. Because, you know, I am sure I haven’t got quite enough sock yarn just yet.

Roving with twist

007024Yesterday I pulled out the second half of the roving I’d been working on last month and spun up another singles. Today I’m hoping to squeeze in time to ply.

Sick day knitting

365.081 3/22/2010006007Unfortunately I’m still too sick to knit cables but that did mean I finished up the side to side socks.

Side to Side

side to side

I’ve been working here and there on my second Side to Side sock, the mate to the test knit I did last fall. I took it with me to California because the plain stockinette is easy to pick up and put down. I’ve long since learned that it’s no use trying to knit cably things when I’m sick so this weekend when the annual sinus infection descended I pulled this guy back out.
