You know it’s fall when

a cloud of boat-tailed grackles descends on your yard. This is actually a very small flock. Sometimes the front yard is black with them and I have a pretty good sized front yard. It sounds like hundreds of squeaky gates when they are out there.

  1. We get the common variety here. Someone put up a Martin house one year and they had a fiesta. I saw the Robins in large groups congregating this week. Sure enough they took off just as the Junco’s came in making a hullabaloo when it was warm, trying to pick out nesting spots. The cats were on the porch salivating.

  2. Oddly, in SW PA we don’t get any grackles in the autumn, just spring and early summer. I have a cage I put around the tube feeder and the tray only gets safflower seed which the grackles don’t like. I really don’t mind feeding the but they are such voracious eaters!
