Back in July I admired some cute gloves with a bit of gingham on the cuff that a friend of mine did as a test knit. A little conversation ensued in which she suggested we really ought to have some gingham socks for Sock Madness. That coincided with my need for some easy knitting during our vacation on the Cape and voila, an idea was born. Right now the pattern is only available to current members of the Sock Madness Ravelry group but in January I’ll make it a free download for everyone. I’m really pleased with how they turned out. Now if the weather would just turn cool so I could wear them. Thanks for the idea Wendy!

Soccer’s Socks

This is the final pair of socks I test knit for the Sock Madness competition. As round 6 is finally underway I can at last reveal them. These are Soccer’s knit with size 0 DPNs using On Your Toes and Squoosh Tealicious. They were a lot of fun to knit and I’m quite happy with the results. I have to admit though, I’m looking forward to a little non-sock knitting for awhile. I’ll be ready to go again in the fall when the patter submissions start rolling in.

Lookee! My GAMs are finally off the needles. They were knit with Opal Flamingo on size 0 needles.

The Aragorn socks are finally off the needles! I realize the caston looks loose, I think it really needs to be in order to fit the recipient. I”ll be holding my breath until I find out how they fit. They’ll be off to her very soon indeed.

Now that round three of Sock Madness is off to a good start, I can reveal another test knit sock. This is the GAMs test sock in Opal Rainforest Flamingo. I learned the twisted German cast on for this sock and it’s the first time I’ve done a “strong heel”. Once my swap socks are finished I’ll make a mate for this lonely fella.

These handspun beauties arrived in my mailbox last week. Even though I set up the swap matches I’d forgotten that Rose had me. I had been admiring these from day one and I think they will be the warmest socks I own- perfect for my “snow boots” which are plain rain boots with a fleece liner at the bottom, not at all warm. The cable down the front is really lovely and the seed stitch on the back of the sock sets it off nicely. They were spun from corriedale/mohair and I suspect they will last me for ages so I’ll have many winters with warm feet to remind me of dear friends. Thanks Rose for such a wonderful gift that I’ll treasure for a long time to come.

Finally some sockly progress

I’ve been working away on my swap socks and finished up the gusset yesterday. I immediately panicked when I saw the heel is a short row heel. I can do them but they never look as nice as flap and turn heels in my hands. This one has some tutorial links so I’ll give it another go.

In the process of helping the designer answer questions about this pattern I ended up finishing my Cool Beans socks. It’s a cute pattern but the socks are really too warm for this time of year so I’ll tuck them away til the fall.

Last fall was really busy with test knitting for Sock Madness. It’s such a relief to finally be able to post some of these pictures that I’ve been sitting on for so long. When I saw these cute little socks I thought they’d be a breeze but they are deceptive. Getting those stripes to behave nicely when you decrease for the heel and then pick up for the gusset was rather tricky. Kudos to the designer, Yarnyenta, for creating this inventive pattern and then slogging through the heel a second time to correct some pattern errors and add more detail for those of us less talented. She did a great job and once we had a baby steps approach to the heel hammered out I got through it and the rest of the pattern went fairly smoothly. I knit a second cuff last month but finishing these will have to wait until I get through my swap socks (I’m ready for cables today, yay!)
