As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life. ~John Lubbock

We had a nice visit to the MFA yesterday. We wanted to see “The secrets of tomb 10a” and we also managed to wander into a visiting still life exhibit, prints by Albrecht Durer, modern Indian art, and Cafe and Cabaret with some great Toulouse Latrec posters and sketches.

Shopaholics?

mallcopleyBlack Friday shopaholics we are not. We all got a good nights sleep and then eventually made our way in to Boston for the day. We started off with a few hours in the Copley mall and then made our way to Newbury street for a nose around. There was no heavy duty shopping but a few bits and bobs were picked up and then we headed home for a rousing game of Mexican Train. A full set of Thanksgiving photos can be found over on Flickr here.

Filling in the corners

10-19-cards10-19-stationary10-19-new-potSince we had most of a day Monday available to us we made our day down to the Burlington mall to have a look at another pen shop but found it to be too pricey and highfalutin’ for our tastes. We did find some nice cards and stationary elsewhere in the mall. After that we cruised over to Concord center for a bite to eat, a browse through the kitchen store and a quick visit to Albright Art and Crafts where we’d seen some nice journals. I’d been looking for a teapot in the 6-cup range for awhile that wouldn’t break the bank and this one fit the bill nicely, it’s even got an infuser.

Running on Wool Fumes

10-17-mobs10-17-purchasesWe headed over to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival aka Rhinebeck bright and early, arriving just as the gates opened on Saturday. The weather was clear but cold and there was quite a crowd. We managed to squeeze into our favorite booths and make several purchases. Rose spotted the find of the day in some very reasonably priced lace yarn at the Skaska designs booth.

10-17-vanderbilt10-17-vanderbilt-viewBy lunchtime we were both overstimulated due to the crowds and cold so we made our way out early and spent the rest of the day at the Vanderbilt mansion with it’s lovely view of the Hudson.

Adventures in Rhinebeck

10-16-FDR10-16-ciaMadame Purl suggested a visit to the FDR house this trip so we left early enough on Friday that we had time for a visit there before our dinner reservation at the CIA’s Escoffier. We lucked into another fabulous tour guide who was full of interesting information. We learned that FDR established the very first presidential library. Dinner at the CIA was a wonderful experience and we felt we had the best table in the house with a wonderful view of the action. The scallop appetizer was especially outstanding and we were too stuffed for desert.

Busy beavers

10-15-brattle10-15-penWe’d planned to visit the MFA while Mme Purl was here months ago and I’d reserved the pass. Of course once she was here and we started chatting a visit to Bromfield Pen shop in Boston got added to the itinerary. As we made our way there from the T we stumbled across the Brattle book shop and had to stop in there as well.10-15-mfa10-15-granary

From there we paused at the Granary Burial Ground and then caught the T out to the MFA where we had a lovely lunch and a few hours browse around the museum. The MFA was chock full of art students that meant we had a different sort of view of many of the objects.

Local color

10-14-Orchard-House10-14-doorknockerMadame Purl and I have got this visit thing down to a science now. We’ve learned to plan enough days that we don’t stay up half the night and miss out on too much sleep. This means that we often have time for a bit of sight seeing in addition to whatever fibery events are going on. Since she’s recently been on a writing/writerly things sort of a bent I suggested visiting the Alcott residence, Orchard House. It’s long been on my todo list and we really enjoyed it. The tour guide was animated and interested and had lots of fun stories to tell. I highly recommend it if you’re in the area.

Another visit to the rail trail

Sculpture Buckinham Hopeful Having fully recovered from our last visit to the Nashua Rail Trail we pulled out the bikes again to enjoy another lovely sunny day. This time we made the trip a good deal shorter in hopes of preventing another shoulder flare and so far it seems to have done the trick. Yesterday was quite hot (well for this summer anyway) but we were out early enough that it was still bearable and there was a nice breeze. I do need to find myself some proper shorts as I again ended up with some uncomfortable abrasions. It also seems like my tires need pumped up each time as they were a bit too flat making it tougher to ride than it needed to be. The Canada geese were hopeful we'd toss them some bread when we stopped for a drink but quickly realized none was forthcoming and turned tail for more fertile feeding grounds.

Walkabout

Pan Indian-pipe Lotus Fountain Daylily Yesterday Jason took off work just a few hours early and we ventured out to Tower Hill Botanic Garden. It seems lovely any time of year we go and this time was no exception. There were lots of lovely things blooming and along the loop trail I saw the largest patch of Indian pipe I've ever seen.
