A day at the zoo

It was slightly cooler when we visited the Stone Zoo but you could tell that many of the animals were suffering. The cougar was panting rapidly and the wolves were dousing themselves in a waterfall.

The butterfly place

The girls and I had a lovely visit to the Butterfly Place this week. I was surprised to see quail darting about beneath the foliage. In the hatching quarantine box we even saw a newly emerged blue morpho still wrinkly from the cocoon. Many more butterfly photos can be found in my Flickr set here.

A day at the DeCordova?

The heat was oppressive and air quality dropping fast on the day we visited the DeCordova museum so our visit was fairly brief but we enjoyed it nevertheless. We had a very quick peek about the outdoor exhibits and then a slower gander at the indoor ones.

MFA Open House

Yesterday morning we popped into Boston for a visit to the MFA which was having another free open house. (When did tickets go up to $20? Ouch. We get the museum pass which lets us in for $5 if it’s not a free day) The Japanese garden was finally open though all the blooming plants are done.

We visited the Cafe and Caberet exhibit which has moved downstairs and has more artwork than I recall seeing last time. I really enjoyed another chance to see these prints.

We also visited The Sower by Millet as well as The Sower by van Gogh which is here on loan from Amsterdam. After reading “Sunflowers” I found the paintings so much more interesting since the people in the portraits are now characters I know a little something about. The book is fictional but it’s written by an art historian and based in fact.

Afterward, we trekked over to Blue Ribbon BBQ for an excellent lunch before heading home for the afternoon. As always, a full set of photos for the diehards over on Flickr.

In 1999 we were married beneath the blooming cherry trees in Arnold Arboretum. Yesterday we went back and spent the afternoon strolling about the grounds followed by a lovely dinner at Hamersley’s Bistro in Boston.

Going Postal

Now that the weather’s turned fair, I am trying to walk to the post office more often. I listen to audiobooks on the ipod and I bring my backpack to carry home packages and mail. Unfortunately, my feet are not yet used to wearing sandals again so I also brought home a blister.

We had a nice visit to the MFA yesterday. We wanted to see “The secrets of tomb 10a” and we also managed to wander into a visiting still life exhibit, prints by Albrecht Durer, modern Indian art, and Cafe and Cabaret with some great Toulouse Latrec posters and sketches.

Shopaholics?

Black Friday shopaholics we are not. We all got a good nights sleep and then eventually made our way in to Boston for the day. We started off with a few hours in the Copley mall and then made our way to Newbury street for a nose around. There was no heavy duty shopping but a few bits and bobs were picked up and then we headed home for a rousing game of Mexican Train.
