Now I can’t seem to put it down. The kit was intended to be a throw pillow but I’m not confident my applique can stand up to the abuse a pillow takes so I think I might stretch it on a frame and hang it instead.

The ones I bought are great but the design wastes a lot of paper and needs a fairly large piece so that most of the cute illustrated books I find are too small. When I realized I had an envelope that was just what I wanted I pulled out a ruler, Xacto knife and the cutting mat and set to work. The result is much nicer than my first freehand attempt.

I’ve learned to fold each piece as it will be in the envelope as I go so that when I assemble the card it’s easy to fold it properly for mailing. I rediscovered a tool in my stash that’s perfect for scoring the fold lines and embossing the raised ones. Some of these are going to pen pals and some are going to friends who need a pick me up.

I signed up and promptly got busy and forgot about it. This week I received an envelope with several nice things in it so I took a deep breath and attempted to create a few things of my own. I’m not quite done yet nor do I really have a clue what qualifies as mail art but it’s fun to try something new and I hope she likes what I send back.

This represents my first attempt and though it’s a wee bit wibbly I think it turned out rather nice for a first try. One thing I learned is to tape the insert *after* assembly. A nail file worked very well for scoring and next time I need to try an X-acto knife for cutting.

I bought this cute pincushion pattern (it makes a pear, an apple, a tomato and/or a strawberry) and some fat quarters to go with it. I think the fairies will get made into yet another tea cozy. I need one for each season, surely. We also made a stop at Penzey’s where I filled my shopping list and picked up some recommended beef roast seasoning. At the end of the day I killed two birds with one stone and got a picture of us all which could also work as my 365 self-portrait since I used the timer function on the camera.
