SPA part II

We usually bring plenty of knitting and spinning to do over SPA weekend. This year I worked on some BFL roving from Spunky Eclectic in the Aquarius colorway. I’m halfway through that roving now and hope to get enough yardage for a pair of socks. These ladies also really know how to shop and although I got off to a slow start on Friday I did manage to find some great bargains and lovely fiber by the end of our trip. There’s a full set of pictures on Flickr here.

NETA SPA Knit and Spin

I spent the weekend in Freeport, Maine with some of my local knitting buds. We started our trip with visits to Purl Diva and Halcyon as is our tradition. We always at the Harraseeket and we always do a potluck dinner Saturday night. This is our third year making the trip and I have been saving for this one for months. You couldn’t have a more hilarious wonderful group of ladies to spend the weekend with.  We laughed and we shopped and we ate and had a generally lovely weekend.

In which a shawl is complete

Earlier this week I finished up Multnomah and got it blocked. The weather has been so dreary and grey that I finally gave up and did the old bathroom mirror standby shot. It’s turned out very nicely and I quite like the white stripe.

Anyone knows an ant can’t, move a rubber tree plant

The Multnomah shawl is coming along nicely. Each row is a little longer so it feels like it’s going more and more slowly but it’s not far from done now. I need a few more rows in blue, then another white section and it’ll be off the needles. (I hope you’re not stuck with Shirley singing in your head all day long!)

Bunnies have warm necks

The little homespun angora neckwarmer that I started while keeping Gwen company after her surgery is finished. I cast on 128 stitches, knit 7 1/2 inches of 2 x 2 ribbing and then cast off. I have plenty of yarn left for gloves and a hat but I won’t start those until after I knit my swap pal’s socks and finish up the little Multnomah shawl I’m working on.

A good mail day

The postman has been very good to me indeed. Two new bags arrived that will be very useful for putting things in as Piglet would say. I usually have several active knitting projects and it’s nice to store them each in their own bags so that pattern and needles don’t go astray. The larger bag has lots of useful pockets and may take over as my main knitting bag.

I’m up to ten pen pals now and this means my post office box has often got fun letters and things. This time I had three waiting for me including a lovely bookmark to boot!

Bunny Cowl

I started the bunny cowl as something to do while I kept Gwen company during her post-surgery confinement. All that 2×2 ribbing is a bit tedious so I just pick it up now and then when I need something to knit that doesn’t require concentration. It still needs 3 or 4 inches before I bind off. I hope to have enough yarn left for a hat and perhaps some mittens or gloves.

Multnomah

I planned a few changes to the Multnomah pattern when I packed for the Colorado trip. The circ closest to the size called for that was long enough for a shawl was a 1 1/2 which is a bit on the small side even for a loose knitter like me. I don’t mind a shawl with a bit denser fabric since wind chills can get pretty nippy here in winter. To compensate for what I expect would be a smaller final result I’m going to stop knitting near the end of the ball and do the feather and fan portion in white with a stripe of the blue halfway through.

Shop til you drop

The first day of our visit we spent shopping the local yarn stores, fabric shops and assorted and sundry other shops. I found the “Enchanted Sole” which has been on my wishlist for awhile. It has several fun sock patterns that I would love to knit. In the remnant bin at Elfriede’s I found some great fat quarters that would make a nice spring tea cozy and a fantastic deal on two 2-yard remnants of silk dupioni that would make lovely tops. I was also excited to find this tin of lovely postcards. My list of pen pals is really growing so these will come in handy!

Trip Knitting

Before I left I prepared lots of knitting to take along on my trip. I wound yarn and pulled patterns and selected things that would be easy to knit while we talk and visit. The brown object is a 2 by 2 ribbed cowl in handspun angora. I have no pattern but just cast on what seemed a reasonable number of stitches. I plan to knit several inches and then bind off. I hope to have enough yarn left for a hat and either mittens or gloves. The purple yarn did not materialize into anything while I was away and in fact, that project is getting dumped in favor of something new I picked up in my travels. The blue yarn is Handmaiden Casbah that will become the Multnomah shawl. I’m planning to knit until most of the skein is gone, then switch to white for the feather and fan border with a stripe of the blue about halfway through the feather and fan.
